In this digital painting workshop, longtime veteran entertainment industry artist, Paul Lasaine, uses examples and live demonstrations to explain the most important concepts in picturemaking. Paul will share with you his secrets of silhouette, atmosphere, space, color, texture, lighting, and more in this exciting workshop covering three distinct styles of painting.
This workshop is ideal for intermediate to advanced level students.

Paul Lasaine grew up in the San Fernando Valley in California, spending most summers visiting national parks with his family where he gained an acute appreciation for the beauty and complexity of nature. After graduating from the California State University at Northridge with a degree in illustration, Paul landed a job at Walt Disney Studios first as an illustrator, then as a matte painter, working on such films as Aliens 3, and Batman Returns. He headed Disney’s Matte Painting Dept. until his departure for the then-newly formed DreamWorks Animation in 1994, where he worked on The Prince of Egypt and The Road to Eldorado as a designer, painting supervisor, and art director. In 1999, Paul moved to New Zealand to become an art director on Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Paul has since focused on design for animation, working at DreamWorks, Sony, Laika, and Warner Brothers where he is currently the Production Designer on an upcoming animated feature. He lives in California with his wife, their daughter, and two cats.

Daniel Arriaga is a character designer and sketch artist at Pixar with over a decade of industry experience, having worked on such hit films as Ratatouille, Wall-E, Up, and Toy Story 3. In 2009, Daniel moved to Disney where he art directed on “Prep and Landing: Naughty vs Nice” and contributed designs for Wreck-It Ralph, before returning home to Pixar. A rising star in the industry, Daniel loves to share his knowledge and teach new students who are passionate about characters. Daniel currently lives in the San Francisco Bay area with his wife and kids. During this 2 hour portfolio review session, instructors will be reviewing artwork that has been submitted for a critique. All attending artists are encouraged to submit their portfolios, but we will be accepting only 5 applicantsIf you would like the chance to have your portfolio reviewed, please submit 3-5 images to by Wednesday March 1, 2017.
Please be advised that if your portfolio is chosen, your work will be critiqued on screen and will be seen by all attendees. Your identity will remain anonymous unless you request otherwise

In this workshop, Jesper will highlight successful examples of illustration and teach you how to avoid some common mistakes when it comes to the designing process. He will take you through a series of tips and tricks in creating a consistent illustration through composition, dynamic drawing, colors and contrast, and lastly clarity and readability, which is one of the most important factors in creating memorable illustrative paintings.

Topics covered include:

Jesper Ejsing first discovered the fantasy genre through the works of Tolkien and was introduced to Dungeons & Dragons on Christmas Day, 1986. Skipping through the pages of the D&D rulebooks, he set a goal then which would define the rest of his life: he would become a fantasy artist. He would make a living illustrating things and beings that live only in the imagination… one way or another. He studied Danish Literature and Art History in university before quitting to become a freelance artist full-time. The early years meant drawing anything for money, but with time and relentless hard work, he was able concentrate on purely fantasy art. When he finally got his first assignment for Dungeons & Dragons, it had been 20 years from when he first set this lifelong goal. He had set out on a journey on that Christmas Day, pursued his dream stubbornly and at times ignorant to the realities of life, and after two decades of traveling, he had finally returned home. Jesper Ejsing currently lives in Copenhagen, Denmark, with his two sons and wife, Lea, where he continues to paint and write. Claire will be doing a traditional style live demo, where she will show her process and provide tips as she goes along.

Claire Wendling was born in Montpellier but relocated to Angoulême. She first decided to study biology, but at age 17, she found a calling to art that led her to the school of the Beaux-Arts of Angoulême. In her third year, she won the Alph-Art Avenir at the Angoulême festival in 1989. In November 1990, Claire worked on “Theo”, the first part of a series called “Les Lumières de l’Amalou”. For Wendling and her scenarist Gibelin, they had instant success and in 1991 they won the the “Prix de la Presseaward. While continuing the series, she collaborated with the Smurfs journal where she created the character Garance. She has also created covers for the magazine Player One, and won Best Young Illustrator in Angoulême in 1992. After her series, Claire worked in the States on the animated Warner Bros. movie Excalibur. With her collection of sketches, Desk (Delcourt edition) and Drawers (Cycliste edition), Wendling continues to express her beautiful talent.

In this workshop, live-action concept artist, Karla Ortiz, teaches her methods for illustrating characters in a narrative setting from conceptual idea to finish. Creating a relationship between the viewer and the artwork is a tricky task, but by keeping in mind narrative hierarchies, composition of elements, and a character’s personality, you will be able to make your character feel more alive in a storied world.
This workshop is ideal for intermediate to advanced level students.

In her artistic career, Karla Ortiz’s work has been wide and varied. As a concept artist, Karla Ortiz has worked for NCSOFT, Ubisoft, Kabam, Industrial Light & Magic, and Marvel Studios. As a professional Illustrator, her images have been featured on covers and in books published by Wizards of the Coast, Ace Books, Tor Books, as well as numerous independent authors and toy makers. As a fine artist, she has shown in the Studio Gallery SF, the Safehouse Studios shows, Spoke Art Gallery, Nucleus Gallery, and Thinkspace Art Gallery. Karla currently works and lives in San Francisco, California, with her cat Keedy Bady.
